用于過程控制
過程控制要用到模擬量。模擬量一般是指連續(xù)變化的量，如電流、電壓、溫度、壓力等物理量。過程控制的目的就是，根據(jù)有關(guān)模擬量的當(dāng)前與歷史的輸入狀況，產(chǎn)生所要求的開關(guān)量、或模擬量輸出，以使系統(tǒng)工作參數(shù)能按一定要求工作。是連續(xù)生產(chǎn)過程最常用的控制。
過程控制的類型很多。
PLC用于過程控制，已是一個(gè)趨勢(shì)。因?yàn)橛肞LC實(shí)現(xiàn)這個(gè)控制，其價(jià)格比用別的要低，而且，用它時(shí)，在進(jìn)行模擬量控制的同時(shí)，還可很方便的進(jìn)行其它控制。再加上各種過程控制模塊的開發(fā)與應(yīng)用，以及相關(guān)軟件的推出及使用，用PLC進(jìn)行種種過程控制已變得很容易，其編程也很簡(jiǎn)便。所以，目前有的廠家PLC用于模擬量控制的份額，已超過用于順序控制。
用于運(yùn)動(dòng)控制
運(yùn)動(dòng)控制主要指，對(duì)工作對(duì)象的位置、速度及加速度所作的控制?？梢允菃巫鴺?biāo)，即控制對(duì)象作直線運(yùn)動(dòng)；也可是多坐標(biāo)的，控制對(duì)象的平面、立體，以至于角度變換等運(yùn)動(dòng)。有時(shí)，還可控制多個(gè)對(duì)象，而這些對(duì)象間的運(yùn)動(dòng)可能還要有協(xié)調(diào)。
上個(gè)世紀(jì)50年代誕生于美國(guó)的數(shù)控技術(shù)，簡(jiǎn)稱數(shù)控（NC），就是基于電子計(jì)算機(jī)及這個(gè)脈沖量的應(yīng)用而不斷發(fā)展與完善的運(yùn)動(dòng)控制技術(shù)。而今，已發(fā)展到非常完善的境地，已是成為當(dāng)今自動(dòng)化技術(shù)的一個(gè)重要支柱。
PLC也已具備處理脈沖量的能力。PLC有脈沖信號(hào)輸入點(diǎn)或模塊，可接收脈沖量輸入（PI）。PLC有脈沖信號(hào)輸出點(diǎn)或模塊，可輸出脈沖量（PO）。有了處理PI / PO這兩種功能，加上PLC已有數(shù)據(jù)處理及運(yùn)算能力，完全可以依NC的原理進(jìn)行運(yùn)動(dòng)控制。
