?PLC控制系統(tǒng)與電器控制系統(tǒng)相比，有許多相似之處，也有許多不同。不同之處主要在以下幾個方面：從控制方法上看，電器控制系統(tǒng)控制邏輯采用硬件接線，利用繼電器機械觸點的串聯或并聯等組合成控制邏輯，其連線多且復雜、體積大、功耗大，系統(tǒng)構成后，想再改變或增加功能較為困難。另外，繼電器的觸點數量有限，所以電器控制系統(tǒng)的靈活性和可擴展性受到很大限制。而PLC采用了計算機技術，其控制邏輯是以程序的方式存放在存儲器中，要改變控制邏輯只需改變程序，因而很容易改變或增加系統(tǒng)功能。系統(tǒng)連線少、體積小、功耗小，而且PLC所謂“軟繼電器”實質上是存儲器單元的狀態(tài)，所以“軟繼電器”的觸點數量是無限的，PLC系統(tǒng)的靈活性和可擴展性好。從工作方式上看，在繼電器控制電路中，當電源接通時，電路中所有繼電器都處于受制約狀態(tài)，即該吸合的繼電器都同時吸合，不該吸合的繼電器受某種條件限制而不能吸合，這種工作方式稱為并行工作方式。而PLC的用戶程序是按一定順序循環(huán)執(zhí)行，所以各軟繼電器都處于周期性循環(huán)掃描接通中，受同一條件制約的各個繼電器的動作次序決定于程序掃描順序，這種工作方式稱為串行工作方式。從控制速度上看，繼電器控制系統(tǒng)依靠機械觸點的動作以實現控制，工作頻率低，機械觸點還會出現抖動問題。而PLC通過程序指令控制半導體電路來實現控制的，速度快，程序指令執(zhí)行時間在微秒級，且不會出現觸點抖動問題。從定時和計數控制上看，電器控制系統(tǒng)采用時間繼電器的延時動作進行時間控制，時間繼電器的延時時間易受環(huán)境溫度和溫度變化的影響，定時精度不高。而PLC采用半導體集成電路作定時器，時鐘脈沖由晶體振蕩器產生，精度高，定時范圍寬，用戶可根據需要在程序中設定定時值，修改方便，不受環(huán)境的影響，且PLC具有計數功能，而電器控制系統(tǒng)一般不具備計數功能。從可靠性和可維護性上看，由于電器控制系統(tǒng)使用了大量的機械觸點，其存在機械磨損、電弧燒傷等，壽命短，系統(tǒng)的連線多，所以可靠性和可維護性較差。而PLC大量的開關動作由無觸點的半導體電路來完成，其壽命長、可靠性高，PLC還具有自診斷功能，能查出自身的故障，隨時顯示給操作人員，并能動態(tài)地監(jiān)視控制程序的執(zhí)行情況，為現場調試和維護提供了方便。
