物質都是由分子組成，分子是由原子組成，原子中有帶負電的電子和帶正電荷的質子組成。在正常狀況下，一個原子的質子數與電子數量相同，正負平衡，所以對外表現出不帶電的現象。但是電子環(huán)繞于原子核周圍，一經外力即脫離軌道，離開原來的原子兒而侵入其他的原子B，A原子因缺少電子數而帶有正電現象，稱為陽離子、B原子因增加電子數而呈帶負電現象，稱為陰離子。
造成不平衡電子分布的原因即是電子受外力而脫離軌道，這個外力包含各種能量(如動能、位能、熱能、化學能……等)在日常生活中，任何兩個不同材質的物體接觸后再分離，即可產生靜電。
當兩個不同的物體相互接觸時就會使得一個物體失去一些電荷如電子轉移到另一個物體使其帶正電，而另一個體得到一些剩余電子的物體而帶負電。若在分離的過程中電荷難以中和，電荷就會積累使物體帶上靜電。所以物體與其它物體接觸后分離就會帶上靜電。通常在從一個物體上剝離一張塑料薄膜時就是一種典型的“接觸分離”起電，在日常生活中脫衣服產生的靜電也是“接觸分離”起電。
固體、液體甚至氣體都會因接觸分離而帶上靜電。這是因為氣體也是由分子、原子組成，當空氣流動時分子、原子也會發(fā)生“接觸分離”而起電。
我們都知道摩擦起電而很少聽說接觸起電。實質上摩擦起電是一種接觸又分離的造成正負電荷不平衡的過程。摩擦是一個不斷接觸與分離的過程。因此摩擦起電實質上是接觸分離起電。在日常生活，各類物體都可能由于移動或摩擦而產生靜電。另一種常見的起電是感應起電。當帶電物體接近不帶電物體時會在不帶電的導體的兩端分別感應出負電和正電。其它起電方式有：熱電和壓電起電、亥姆霍茲層、噴射起電等。
